Answer engine optimization
Answer engine optimization: being the source the answer is built from
An answer engine reads a few pages and returns one paragraph. Whoever supplied that paragraph gets named, and everyone else waits underneath, where fewer people scroll.
Answer engine optimization is the work of being one of those sources. This page says how Crownler checks whether you are, and where the checking stops.

What answer engine optimization means
An answer engine is anything that returns a written answer in place of a list of links: the AI Overview above a Google result, a featured snippet, a chat model, a voice assistant. The shape differs and the mechanic repeats. A handful of pages get read, a paragraph gets written, a few sources get credited.
AEO is the work of making a page easy to lift from. A question answered in the first two sentences, a fact stated once and plainly, a heading that matches the question somebody actually asked, a company a machine can identify. Old craft, new consumer.
The measurement is the hard part. A paragraph has no position, and the same question asked twice can be answered twice differently. So the honest unit is presence with evidence: were you named, who was named alongside you, and which pages the answer credited.
What Crownler checks
Two of the lines below say what is missing. They are on the page for the same reason the others are: an answer engine claim that cannot be checked is worth nothing to the person paying for it.
- Measured today
Presence in the written answer
Each question goes to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini through their APIs and the answer is stored whole, with the brands it named and the order it named them in.
- Measured today
The credited sources
Every URL cited in the answer, grouped by domain and kept in the order it was cited, which is the list of pages that supplied the paragraph.
- Measured today
AI Overview and featured snippet
The Google result is read with its blocks, so the AI Overview and the featured snippet are recorded next to the organic results, each with the real URL of who occupies it.
- Measured today
Whether the page can be lifted from
The blueprint reads a page into sections and checks it against the rules for its page type, and the audit flags missing headings, thin content and pages a crawler cannot use.
- Measured today
Your own numbers for the same query
Clicks and impressions per query and per page, pulled from your own Search Console property, sitting next to the positions we measured on the same dates.
- Not yet
Whether a citation sent a click
No engine reports it. Search Console counts the click that comes from a result page; a chat answer that names you and sends nobody leaves no record anywhere. We show presence and your own numbers, and we say which is which.
This is the screen

Screens from a demonstration project. The brand, the domain and the numbers are invented: no client data is shown.
How the work goes
01
One page, one question
The engine lifts a passage rather than a site, so a page built around a single question gives it something to lift. The map shows which of your pages already carry a question and which carry nine.
02
Answer in the first two sentences
Then explain. The blueprint shows the page as a low fidelity wireframe with the checks running as you edit, so the answer sits high before anyone writes the long version.
03
Measure the answer as well as the rank
A front carries both on the same date: the organic position and whether the written answer named you. Read side by side, they show a page that holds the list and misses the paragraph.
Who this is for
- Content teams whose best pages now sit underneath an AI Overview.
- Agencies that report on featured snippets and are being asked what happens in the block above them.
- Brands in a category where the buyer asks one question and takes one answer.

Questions about AEO
Is AEO different from GEO?
The work is the same. Answer engine optimization tends to name the answer; generative engine optimization tends to name the engine that writes it. There is a page here for each term because people search for each term.
Does AEO just mean writing FAQs?
A question and answer block is one honest way to state something plainly, and the audit checks that a page has headings and enough content. Stacking questions on a page that answers none of them well changes nothing for either engine.
Which answer engines are measured?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini through their APIs, plus the AI Overview and the featured snippet read from the Google result. Perplexity is in the data model and not running yet. Voice assistants are not measured at all.
Can I see whether an AI answer sent me traffic?
Not reliably, and no tool can honestly claim otherwise. Search Console reports the click that came from a result page. A chat answer that names you and sends no one leaves no line to count. Crownler shows presence and your own Search Console numbers, labelled as two different things.
Do I need to write new content?
Often the page already exists and answers the question in paragraph six. Moving the answer up and stating it once costs less than a new page, and the map and the audit together show which pages are already being reached.
How often is it measured?
Once a week for each question and model, plus any time you click. Google results are read on your click, and the monthly allowance is debited before the call goes out.
